If you live in the United States, these feathers are protected by the Migratory Birds Treaty Act and it is illegal to possess them. Most folks are unaware of the broad scope of this legislation. It even includes feathers you might pick up in your backyard. Seems a bit of an overkill to me but you might want to do some reading on this legislation if you intend to expend your feather collection.
