@coolhandwilliam .. the first thing considered is the quality of the materials. Then I line my tips up; hold the fibers close together then, bend both materials back and forth. They will marry on their own

Fully gutted to fish
Just a quick fly before bed that actually came out not to bad.
First time tying with side tail feathers. The yellow breast is hard to see with the pic; tied in over the tippets.
