The Ally’s Shrimp
#
My fishingbuddy from Germany comes two times on vacation this summer. One week will as usual be zanderfishing and one week will be fishing for salmon and sea run brown. Due to the estimated conditions the first choise of fly fell on ”The Ally’s Shrimp”. Here my first attempt on this pattern and by the way the very first salmon fly I’ve ever tied.

Nicely done Patrik. Do you fly fish for Zander or just the salmon/brown trout. I’m asking because the walleye (Sander vitreus) here love the orange color. Do the Zander (Sander lucioperca) there also go for orange? Catching walleye on a fly is a real challenge. What about Zander ?

Thank You @trublubug ☺️🙏 Actually I’ve never tried flyfishing on Zander. But often thought about it. I’d fish in the shallows at night, when the Zander feeds on small fish ”in the weed”. A fly for that kind of fishing would be a streamer with MagicHead with the colours chartreuse or fl. hot orange. Important: very slow stripping👍

Thanks for sharing the information Patrik. Our walleye cousins do the same thing (shallows at dusk through dark). Very light biters, not easy targets at all. Will see if an ultra slow strip retrieve is helpful here too. Likely be quite a while until I try this though.

We grow with the challenges @trublubug 😉☺️ Hope we’ll be successful 🎣 Let’s keep each other updated👍

Will do Patrik. I envy you the Zander. They get so much bigger than our walleye. My personal best (not on the fly) was a bit over 8 pounds. How I’d like that battle on a 5-6 wt.
