I like these Ed. They are very nicely tied. One question for you. Are they intended as caddis imitations?

Hi Bill. They are. I was experimenting with using a hackle as a wing substitute. I have a lot of larger hackle that I was not using, as well as other feathers. And a friend of mine suggested I use them as wings.

Thanks for the reply Ed. I always find it fun to use materials that are “just sitting around” in new ways. I’m thinking there will be some sore jaws for sure.

The trick is to have long enough hackles so that you can trim the quill and pull it out just in front of a couple of loose wraps. If you trap the quill in, the wing raises. But if you just tie ahead, using the hackle fibers as an a hot, you have a really nice wing, that looks very natural to me.
