Hi Bill. They are. I was experimenting with using a hackle as a wing substitute. I have a lot of larger hackle that I was not using, as well as other feathers. And a friend of mine suggested I use them as wings.
The trick is to have long enough hackles so that you can trim the quill and pull it out just in front of a couple of loose wraps. If you trap the quill in, the wing raises. But if you just tie ahead, using the hackle fibers as an a hot, you have a really nice wing, that looks very natural to me.
