You are on the right track with your technique Reed. Here’s a suggestion for you. Do what you did on this one but don’t try to do the wrapping with a short hackle as in the photo. There’s nothing wrong with using short length hackles, just use several of them to cover the body. Start at the rear just in front of the tail and wrap forward two or three wraps (as far as the hackle length will allow), then tie the hackle off. Tie in a second hackle and repeat the process of wrapping and tying it off. Add as many of the short hackles as necessary to get the fuller look you see on most wooly buggers.
I agree with Zeke that the fly “as is” will likely catch a fish, but a fuller fly will catch more. One last suggestion for you. Try tying the hackles in by their tips rather than by their butts. Guves s more uniform body taper. Keep trying, Rome wasn’t built in a day. LOL
